The news of Succession season 4 first popped up early on in season 3’s airing. On October 26, right between episodes 2 and 3, HBO announced it was ordering a fourth season of the Roy family drama. Parent company WarnerMedia broke the news with a press release (opens in new tab) stating “The season three premiere of [Succession drew over 1.4 million viewers across all platforms, marking a series high and the best premiere night of any HBO Original series since the launch of HBO Max.” It’s now been confirmed that Succession season 4 has entered production and is currently being filmed. HBO has even graced us with a few plot details and confirmed several returning cast members as well.

Before the House of the Dragon finale, a teaser for Succession aired, and it said Succession season 4 release date will be in Spring 2023. The 2023 window was previously announced in the HBO Max Coming Soon reel. Now that Succession season 4 has entered production, we can start speculating on when exactly it’ll hit HBO and HBO Max. We don’t believe season 3’s delayed production cycle — it began in fall 2020 and premiered on October 17, 2021, and was beset by Covid-19-related delays — is to be seen as precedent, so let’s look back at season 2’s schedule. The second season was confirmed (opens in new tab) on June 11, 2018, and the earliest reports of filming beginning popped up in March 2019 (opens in new tab). It then premiered on August 11, 2019. To no great surprise, the entire Succession main cast will be returning for season 4 it has been announced. Yes, that means Brian Cox is back as Logan Roy, as well as his children Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv (Sarah Snook), Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Connor (Alan Ruck). It’s also been confirmed that Gregory Hirsch (Nicholas Braun), Matthew Macfadyen (Matthew Macfadyen) and Gerri Kellman (J. Smith-Cameron) will be featured in season 4. Alongside the expected main players will be familiar supporting cast members Alan Peter Friedman, David Rasche, Fisher Stevens and Justine Lupe. We also expect to see Alexander Skarsgård back as GoJo owner/tech mogul Lukas Mattson, who may have even more power than before, if the acquisition/merger goes through. Although, as of yet, his involvement hasn’t been confirmed.

HBO has released a brief logline for the next season of Succession: “The sale of media conglomerate Waystar Royco to tech visionary Lukas Matsson moves ever closer. The prospect of this seismic sale provokes existential angst and familial division among the Roys as they anticipate what their lives will look like once the deal is completed. A power struggle ensues as the family weighs up a future where their cultural and political weight is severely curtailed.” The big story right now, as we saw in the finale, is that the siblings have been forced out of the decision-making, due to Logan and their mother Caroline Collingwood working behind their backs. And the ever-sneaky Tom seems to have been the snitch who tipped the parents off to the plans. Yes, Gerri is currently the interim CEO of Waystar Royco, but we don’t know how long that will last. Succession season 4’s story will likely almost mirror season 3’s, but instead of just Kendall being on the outs, it’s Shiv, Roman and Ken who are now fighting to stop Logan. Of course, the GoJo merger/acquisition is also at hand, so it will be curious to see how much power Lukas Mattson has.
Will Succession season 4 be the last season?
HBO probably wants to hold onto Succession, but there’s no word about a fifth season. When The Times of London (opens in new tab) asked Brian Cox about a potential fifth season, he was eager to say he’s trying to avoid the show being on the air for too long. He even mocked another show while doing so, saying “I don’t know. No one’s had their contracts renewed. Who knows how long it will go on? We don’t want it to overstay its welcome, like Billions; that’s past its sell-by date. That will not happen with our show.”
