In case you didn’t already know, Apple added the ability to add a handful of widgets to the lock screen as part of its big iOS 16 lock screen customization update. Third-party apps have only just begun to introduce their own lock screen widgets, with Google already having added them for Gmail, Chrome, Google Drive and Google News before now giving us new widgets for Google Maps and the regular Google app....

With multiple rumors proclaiming that Apple’s upcoming iPhone 14 Pro is due for a price hike this year, it seems like we better count on paying more for Apple’s higher-end models. And you can now add another voice to the mix of sources warning about more expensive iPhone Pro models. Dan Ives, an analyst from Wedbush Securities, is forecasting that the iPhone 14 Pro models will “likely” see a $100 price increase, compared to iPhone 13 Pro models....

But behind the scenes, the iPhone 14 Pro models are the most expensive handsets Apple has manufactured so far, according to a teardown undertaken by Nikkei Asia (opens in new tab) and Fomalhaut Techno Solutions. Overall, the analysis claims, the iPhone 14 series’ production costs are 20% higher than the 13’s. The majority of this increase is taken by the iPhone 14 Pro series, and in particular, Apple’s A16 Bionic chipset, which is exclusive to the high-end handsets....

While we likely have just under a month to go until the iPhone 14 Pro officially exists, the usual array of CAD designs and leaks has already given us a good idea of what to expect from Apple’s next flagship handset. Now the graphic designer AR7 (opens in new tab) has pulled all of the reported design elements and rumored features together with bits of the iOS 16 beta to give us a visual representation of what the phone could look like when the screen comes to life....

That’s according to analyst Jeff Pu of Haitong International Securities, who wrote in a recent briefing note (seen by 9to5Mac (opens in new tab)) that Apple is now conducting engineering validation tests on the iPhone 14, based on information from his supply chain sources. These EVTs are run on the first engineering prototype of new phones, and imply that the iPhone 14’s final specs and design have now been decided....

According to a new report from display analyst and regular Apple tipster Ross Young (opens in new tab) of Display Supply Chain Consultants (opens in new tab), the iPhone 14 Pro is expected to ditch the notch and make use of dual display cutouts for the selfie camera and Face ID sensors. But the standard iPhone 14 will keep the notch we saw in the iPhone 13, with base iPhones only expected to move away from the notch in 2023....

Before we get into specifics, it’s worth outlining what plenty of observers believe to be the main problem: the limited value associated with the non-Pro iPhone 14 models that came out in 2022. The iPhone 14 Plus is essentially a bigger screen iPhone 14 with longer battery life. As the name suggests, this isn’t the first entry in the series, and JBL has built on its predecessors with a new three-way speaker system made up of two tweeters, two mid-range drivers and a “powerful racetrack-shaped subwoofer.” The company claims that, as a result of these changes, the new speaker will offer deeper bass and “intense clarity” that’s perfect for large outdoor parties. While the MacBook Air M2 saw a significant redesign that was more akin to 2021’s MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch, this year’s 13-inch MacBook Pro was effectively the same as its predecessor, only with a new chipset. Nevertheless, both notebooks found a slot in our best laptops and best MacBooks lists. Though you could argue that things weren’t all that exciting for MacBooks in 2022, we could see something substantial from Apple in 2023 — including systems with powerful new M2 Pro chips and a new larger screen size for the MacBook Air....
